Skill 3 — Back Float Back-floating is when a child can lie comfortably and relaxed enough on their back in the water so they are able to float. Some children find this skill very easy, others quite difficult. Back-floating is an essential safety skill that all kids need to learn, and often it only come through correct instruction and lots of practice. They key is to break the skill down and only progress when your baby is comfortable.

Skill 2 — Front Float Once your child has been conditioned to take a breath and you both are comfortable being in a pool, front floating is the next step. A big mistake is trying to submerge or dunk children underwater, which only frightens them and actually increases the chance they will ingest water. Instead a slow, gradual approach of floating with the face in the water in needed. Watch the holds and placement of the hands carefully, this is crucial.
